The ways of buying from a farm
There is no single way to buy direct. Each farm uses the ones that fit it, and each one asks something different of you.
At the farm itself
60 farms in this directory sell out in the field or at the holding. It is as direct as it gets: you see where it grows, you ask when it was cut and you pay whoever grew it. Book a time by phone; a working holding is not an open shop.
Their own farm shop
34 farms have a shop of their own. Real opening hours, no appointment, and usually their own produce plus that of two or three neighbours they trust. It is the easiest way in if you have never bought direct.
Growers' market
46 farms set up a market stall. Watch out for one thing: at a market the person who grows it stands alongside the person who resells it. Ask «is this yours?» and you will see the difference in the answer — whoever grew it tells you about the plot without being asked.
A box to your door
14 farms deliver a box. You do not choose: you choose the farm and they put in whatever is at its best that week. It is the best deal for them (they know what to pick) and the best schooling for you, if you accept cooking whatever arrives.
Co-operative
46 farms sell through a co-operative. It is still those families' produce, with the logistics shared. When you buy at the village farming co-op you are buying from several farms at once.
What this directory does not know
We hold no prices and no opening hours: they change every week and a site with old data does more harm than one with none. Every page carries the source and the date of what we do know, and the phone number when it is public. The rest you ask.
